Genki monster girl -- a fusion of the concepts of http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GenkiGirl and http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CuteMonsterGirl, brought forth into one 2-dimensional continuum. Largely made of music, with the rest reserved for wide-eyed excitement, fancreature squee and bitey moods.
I have a magpie's mind, and jump from subject to subject. Before I left school, I was a (non-traditional) senior at UCLA. Having spent my childhood and teens home schooled, college was a wonderful, novel, often painful experience that taught me a lot, not least of all about myself. My life and interests have taken yet another turn, and I don't know what my relationship to school will be in the future; for now I'm on indefinite hiatus while I look for a job and pursue personal interests.
Some of the academic subjects I'm interested in are media and pop culture studies, sociology and social criticism, and cultural geography. More specifically: I'm interested in critical vegan theory, particularly as it concerns essentialism around the vegan diet, representations of veganism and animal issues in the media, and heterodox views on ecology and politics; electronic dance music studies, particularly concerning the reclamation of urban space; and futurist studies, particularly from a pro-immortality standpoint, which is something that I've found lacking in the humanities. The tendency to essentialize around a mortal body (as in, but not limited to, 'human=mortal'), to promote immortophobic memes, and generally to adopt a reactionary stance against life extension (as well as other techno-progressive ideals, such as space travel) is something I find fascinating and alarming. While I fly the flags of both Veganarchism and Transhumanism, I have issues with each camp; in my opinion, the green left needs to pull the stick out and get over some latent Puritanical morality complexes, while the techno-progressives need to acknowledge issues of power, interpretation, and the creation of knowledge more than they often have.
I love listening to, collecting, researching, and mixing EDM. In the Spring of 2011, I took a course on the history of electronic dance music that cemented my passion and pretty much convinced me to drop out and devote myself to this art form. Some of my favorite styles are UK and Detroit techno, tech-house, old school Goa and psy-trance, and various forms of synth-and-drum-machine dance music from the 80s and early 90s that fall under the category of "Proto Trance". I also like drum n' bass, garage, electrofunk, disco, industrial and goth rock, world fusion, psychedelia, jazz, and a lot of other music, but most of the time it'll be something rhythmic and electronic.
I don't play video games as much as I used to, but the arcade used to be a holy pilgrimage and Sega still owns a little chunk of my soul. The Genesis, Sega CD and Saturn were formative in my younger years, with Nintendo, Sony and SNK taking a distant second. I'm mostly content to sit on the sidelines and watch LPs now, though.
I'm a fan of art house and world cinema, though not as knowledgeable as I'd like to be. When I watch a film, narrative concerns take a back seat to atmosphere, symbolism, and moments of private revelation... I like to be shown something I've never seen before. Some favorite films of mine are Inland Empire, L'Avventura, L'Eclisse, Syndromes And A Century, White Meadows, Playtime, Bagdad Cafe, The Big Empty, The Zeros, Infernal Affairs, Death And The Maiden, Akira Kurosawa's Dreams, The Holy Mountain, Let The Right One In, The Ninth Gate, Sleep Dealer, Lost Highway, Local Hero, Paperhouse, To Sleep With Anger, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Remember His Past Lives. Those are the good films; I have a lot of cinematic guilty pleasures as well. ^^
I like some anime and manga, and every so often I'll get hardcore into a series. Favorite shows: Mushishi, Penguindrum, Utena, Star Driver, Natsu no Arashi, Madoka Magica, Key: The Metal Idol, The Hakkenden. Favorite movies: A Tree Of Palme, Wonderful Days, The Animatrix, the Utena movie, the Haruhi movie, Metropolis, Grave Of The Fireflies, Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke, Light Years.
While externally male, I identify as gender-neutral/somewhere on the female side of androgyny, depending on mood. 'they' works alright as a pronoun.
I'd like to write my own music, start my own packaged food business, travel the world (once the TSA is either abolished or becomes significantly less toxic), find my tribe, attend all the best parties and throw the next best ones.
The best way to get to know me is to read my journal; this is my home on the web, and I'm always open to adding new people provided we have enough in common. Though a number of my posts are locked, I won't make my DW "Friends Only", because I enjoy reading strangers' journals too much.
